Platform terms of service
Most platforms ban buying, selling or transferring accounts and usernames. When they enforce that rule, the buyer usually loses everything, and nobody refunds them.
| What can happen | Example on record |
|---|---|
| Account or handle taken back by the platform | TikTok reclaimed squatted usernames during the 2021 crackdown |
| Mass removal of trading accounts | Instagram removed hundreds of accounts tied to the trade in February 2021, including swappers and middlemen |
| Suspension under spam or manipulation rules | Twitter permanently suspended accounts from the OGUsers network (2021) |
| Reclaims through support | Discord lets previous owners recover accounts with security answers and doesn't tell the current holder |
| Marketplace sections removed | OGU pulled its Instagram sections after a conflict with Meta (July 2026) and brought them back for upgraded members only (October 2026) |
Legal exposure
Criminal cases
- 2019: six members of "The Community" and three phone-company insiders were charged over SIM-swap thefts of about $2.4M.
- 2022: members of a Massachusetts ring that stole OG accounts and crypto were sent to prison.
- 2023: the 2020 Twitter hacker was sentenced to five years in a US prison.
Civil lawsuits
- 2025: Epic Games served an OGU member with a lawsuit over selling "illegally obtained" Fortnite accounts.
- Instagram has sent cease-and-desist letters to people it identified in the trade.
Why it matters to buyers
- Buying a hijacked account means you hold stolen property and can lose it at any time.
- Leaked forum databases have been used to identify members.
- OGU bans hacked and SIM-swapped goods for these reasons.
Data exposure
OGU's databases have leaked five times. Usernames, emails, IP addresses, private messages and password hashes have all been exposed, and the leaks were posted or sold on rival forums.
- Treat anything you put in a forum PM as something that could become public.
- Use a unique email and password for the forum.
- Check whether your email shows up in breach databases such as Have I Been Pwned.
Infrastructure risk
| When | What happened | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Jul 2023 | A server failure lost about 3½ months of forum data | Keep your own records of deals and vouches |
| Jan 2025 | Operation Talent: an FBI and Europol-led operation seized major forums and the Sellix shop platform | Don't depend on a single storefront or payment tool |
| Feb 2026 | A site crash, and a fake OGU site used for impersonation | Check the domain every time |
| Jul 2026 | oguser.com was suspended by its registrar, and the forum ran on ogusers.gg for two days | Know the official backup domain |
Money risk
- Staff never refund deals. Every deal is at your own risk.
- Crypto payments can't be reversed, and exchanges can freeze funds. One $80k freeze dispute was ongoing in late 2026.
- Prices are driven by hype and can collapse. Newer platforms' names sell for very little next to established ones (see Market).
